The green pilchard typically moves in schools.
It's seaid that green pilchard caught by fishing boats suffer from low activity. In order to keep them fresh till their destination, fishermen would add a catfish to the school, so it can agitate them and keep them moving.
The fact of the matter is, since most catfish are freshwater species, the idea that they are used to agitate pilchard from salt waters is a bit of a stretch.
