The overall shape of the fire eel closely resembles that of a moray eel, but taxonomically, it belongs to the Synbranchiformes order and is more closely related to asian swamp eels. Despite this, fishing enthusiatsts still prefer to nickname it the "firespark eel" rather than the "firespark swamp eel."
