Scientific Name: Macroglossum stellatarum
In biology, the incredible similarity in appearance and habits between the invertebrate Hummingbird Hawkmoth and the vertebrate hummingbird is called "convergent evolution." It's generally believed that, given highly similar environments, different species will evolve the same functional traits and gradually "converge." At the same time, because these convergent creatures occupy similar ecological niches, they generally do not co-occur.
In other words, where there are Hummingbird Hawkmoths, it's unlikely that you'll see any hummingbirds.
