After discovering that mosquitofish prey on mosquito larvae, the species was introduced to rivers and lakes as a biological control for mosquitoes.
However, researchers soon discovered that mosquitofish also prey on frog tadpoles and other fish eggs, causing ecological damage.
What was meant to solve a mosquito problem inadvertently created a new "fish problem." A classic case of a solution backfiring.
